There are good and bad sides of both teachers unions and tenure.
Teachers Unions help negotiate contracts, ensure that qualified teachers get hired, and protect teachers if they get sued. The negative side of the protection is that it will protect any teacher in the union no matter if they're good or not. This is hard to determine what we should do about that- is there an easy way to fix it? Teachers Union seem to have more positives then negatives.
Tenure on the other hand, I believe, she be harder or the process longer to get. I'm all for having job security but, there are too many bad teachers getting tenured and then being able to teach for many years as a bad teacher. If we would extend the time frame from 3 years to 5-10 it would help to make sure teachers are good at what they do.
Great thoughts Carly! I can see there are a lot of pros and cons to tenure and teachers unions. I definitely like the idea of extending the number of years teaching before you are eligible for tenure that way there are more opportunities for observing the teacher of the X number of years going into the tenure acceptance.
ReplyDeleteI like your idea of lengthening the time it takes for a teacher to get tenured. It would be a good way to give the teachers more experience to be better teachers and also a good way to evaluate the bad ones longer to see if they improve and are able to teach.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I agree with you that there seems to be more positives that outweigh the negatives when it comes to teacher unions. I, too, agree that lengthening the time for a teacher to get tenure would be a very reasonable solution!
