Balancing Extra Curricular's with classroom expectations

Our society is very sport driven- do I agree, no. I think sports are great for kids and that you should try all types... but with such seriousness? What happened to children PLAYING. Our expectations should be the highest possible for our students. We need to engage them in the classroom and teach in ways that will do them the most good. Elementary classrooms shouldn't have much homework. When i was that age I didn't even think about it until 5th or 6th grade and then it was minimal. Give the students work time and its there choice whether to do it at the given time or having to do it at home. The only "homework" that I think should be assigned is reading for enjoyment at home. So, our expectations should be for the student to be engaged in the classroom and working hard. If they fail to do that, then they will have to do it on their own time, cutting into their extra curricular activities.

  1. I agree that children should be engaged in the classroom and that is the teacher's job to keep the class on track. I also think that it would teach the kids alot about time management if they weren't doing their homework in the classroom and then realized that they had to give up time spent on an activity to get it done.

  2. I agree that sports have a great focus for parents along with competition. But extra curricular activities, if done right, provide more opportunities to build on what they have learned in the classroom and practice social skills. I also agree that there has been to much homework given out to students. Time at home should be used for time spent with their families and extra curricular activities.

  3. What a great statement "what ever happened to children playing"! This is so accurate! As for homework, I fear there are too many other stimuli for students to "choose" to read for enjoyment. I would love to see homework approached in a more holistic manner (a homework assignment that ties in all subjects) rather than separating everything into compartments.
